Joan Lenore (Bailey) Bates

Joan Lenore (Bailey) Bates, was born to John and Naomi Bailey on July 19, 1947, in Santa Paula, CA.  She passed away on February 1, 2017, at her home in Ventura, with her loved ones by her side.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved brother, John David Bailey; her first husband, Sherman Caples; her paternal grandparents John and Alva Bailey; maternal grandparents Lester and Jewel Driver, and numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by adoring husband of 30 years, Gary Bates; loving parents John and Naomi Bailey; daughter Sherleen and husband Larry Valenzuela; son Dr. Bryan and wife Amy Caples; daughter Cary and husband Mike Stranahan; daughter Teresa McQuade; daughter Jenell and husband Joe Queen; brother Steven and wife Jan Bailey; sister Brenda and husband Chuck Cummings and their children Brendan Cummings and Sheena Cummings and grandson Aiden Cummings; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Michael Servin, David Servin, Rachel (Servin) and husband Mark Johnstone, Zackeree Caples, Jaykob Caples, Mackenzie Caples, Madison Caples, Isaac Valenzuela, Lauren Valenzuela, Tiffany and husband Collin Henry and great-granddaughter Claire, Michael Riggs, Carly Charbonneau, and Ally Owen.

Joan met her first love, Sherman Caples, while attending Santa Paula High School.  They married and had two wonderful children: Sherleen and Bryan.  Sherman passed away unexpectedly in 1977 leaving her as a young widow.

Joan was so grateful to be able to work and provide for her kids.  She was extremely proud of her almost 30-year career working for the County of Ventura. She loved helping people and made many dear friends that she treasured.

One of Joan’s greatest joys was being able to attend her parent’s 70th wedding anniversary party in July, 2016, and to celebrate her final Thanksgiving and Christmas with her family.  She was fiercely proud of her family roots and felt enormously blessed to have been raised in a loving, Christian home.

Joan was active in the Jubilee Senior class lead by Pastor Leonard DeWitt at Ventura Baptist Church. She was loved, and was a blessing to so many for her kindness and bright smile.

During her extended illness, and especially during her final days, she began to long for the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Joan had accepted Him as her Savior at the age of 15 during a revival at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church on the Limoneira Ranch in Santa Paula.  She served and praised her Lord faithfully to the end.

Joan and her husband Gary loved dancing, traveling, and going out for breakfast or lunch then taking long rides along the coast.  She also enjoyed crafts and decorating every card and gift she gave to family and friends.  Most of all she especially loved spending time with her family.

Joan wanted to gratefully acknowledge the patient, dedicated and loving care she received from her husband Gary during her 18 month illness.  She said she could not have gone through it all without him.  She also wished to acknowledge and thank: Dr. Michael Hogan; PA Michael Diaz; and all of her other many doctors; along with the caring staff of Community Memorial Hospital and Livingston Visiting Nurses.

There will be a visiting/viewing on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Charles Carroll Funeral Home, 15 Teloma Drive, Ventura from 5:00-6:00 p.m. All are welcome.
