Perfect Attendance: Congratulations To the following students who had Perfect Attendance at SPHS during the First Semester: Esperanza Aguilar, Jose Alvarez, J. Areli Andrade, Maricela Flores, Marisol Fregoso, Yesenia Lemus, Salvador Magana, Maria Medina, Luis Mendez, Maricela Mendoza, Rafael Mendoza, Rigoberto Rico, Diana Romero, Christina Thong, Benjamine Zacarias, and Maria Zacarias. The students will be recognized at a special luncheon. Knowledge Bowl Competition: Congratulations to the SPHS Knowledge Bowl Team and Advisor, Ms. Borchert. SPHS Team won all 3 rounds at last week’s Knowledge Bowl competition against 3 tough County schools. Kudos to Felicia Avendano, Erin & Megan Richardson, Daniel Kim, and Vanessa Zurita. SPHS will host the Knowledge Bowl competition that will include teams from Ventura, Oxnard, and Moorpark High Schools on March 15 at7:00 PM.Mock Trial Winner: Congratulations to Edgar Benitez who won the Best Bailiff Award at the Ventura County Mock Trial Competition.Cesar E. Chavez ESSAY Contest: WIN $50!! Write an essay (50 words or more) regarding the life and accomplishments ofCesar Chavez. Last day to submit an essay is March 18, in the library.SPHS JUNIORS: It’s not too late to register for the SAT test that will be offered at SPHS in May. If you plan on applying to a 4-year university, you MUST take the ACT and the SAT tests. The ACT and/or the SAT are a requirement for admission to all California State and University of California campuses. The registration deadline for the next SAT test is March 25th. If you get Free/Reduced lunch, you qualify for a fee waiver. Registration materials are in the College & Career Center and fee waivers are in the Guidance office.Parents of seniors at SPHS: If your son or daughter plans to graduate June 2005, they need to meet with their counselor to assure that they are on track to graduate.MESA (Math Engineer Science Achievement) Club: Congratulations to the SPHS MESA Club for participating in the Math quest Team Competition at the MESA/Science and Technology Day at UCSB. SPHS Team brought home a first Place. The Math quest included problems in trigonometry and pre-calculus. The SPHS MESA Team included Ricardo Alamillo, Jonathan Cervantes, Maria Medina and Rosalina Villalon. Special congratulations to the team Advisors Mr. Nick Rodriquez and Ms. Alexis Ortiz.SPHS High School Girls State Representatives: Five SPHS girls were selected to participate in the Girls State Speech Competition. The competition took place during the month of February 2005. The top five female students were selected by a committee that included a counselor, teachers, and the ASB Director. The top five students were invited to present their speech to a committee from the American Legion Auxiliary Ventura California Unit. The students selected to represent SPHS was Kristen Shuel and the alternate selected was Sofia RamosCalifornia High School Exit Exam: SPHS administered the CAHSEE to all 10th and 11th grade students that need to pass the exam on Tuesday, March 15, and Wednesday March 16. The results will arrive sometime in June 2005.
WASC Visitation: the WASC Accreditation team visited SPHS during the week of March 6th-9th. The visiting team left SPHS with nine commendations and six recommendations. A special commendation to all SPHS staff for their dedication and time during the WASC process.ScholarshipsThe NEW, UPDATED Scholarship Bulletin (printed March 4, 2005)is now available in the College & Career Center. There are 26 NEW Scholarships listed. Check it out and apply!! Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Scholars:This prestigious distinction will be awarded to students who have exemplified outstanding leadership skills. Students who are great leaders first, despite a weaker academic performance, should apply.Deadline: March 18, 2005The Internet is an excellent resource for scholarship research.
