She was born November 2, 1908 in Wenatchee, Washington, and was a county resident for 16 years, coming from Fresno. There she worked as a cook for the Fresno School District.She is survived by her sons, Dan Johnson of Santa Paula and Bill Davis of Ingram, Texas; daughters, Lucy Wall of Washington and Louise Thompson of Fresno; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sisters, Naomi Nolte of Springfield, Oregon, and Beverly Weever of Snohomish, Washington; and brother Ray Barber of Washington.Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.Arrangements under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, Santa Paula.Laura BennettFormer Ventura County resident Laura Bennett, age 106, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2000 in Palm Desert after a brief illness.She was born in Sentinel, Missouri on August 28, 1893. She was born August 2, 1914 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and was a county resident for 50 years, coming from Hawaii.She attended Marlborough schools, and received her A.B. degree at Mount Holyoke College, followed by graduate work at Radcliffe. She was a member of the Mathematics Department at the Beaver Co. Day School at Chestnut Hill before going to Philadelphia, where she was head of that department at Springside School in suburban Chestnut Hill. In Santa Paula she worked as a secretary for the Presbyterian Church.Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Santa Paula, the Rev. Chuck Laird and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Bousman officiating. Private interment will be held Wednesday, March 22 at Santa Barbara Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Santa Clara Valley Hospice, 133 N. Eduard S. Walden
A “Celebration of Life Memorial Service” will be held for Eduard S. Walden on March 25, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 133 N. Mill St., Santa Paula.He was born in Santa Paula on May 17, 1916, and passed away February 8, 2000 in Tucson, Arizona.The family requests that any donations be made to the Santa Clara Valley Hospice or charity of choice.Mary E. RhodesMary E. Rhodes, formerly of Santa Paula, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 26, 2000. She was 84.A memorial service was held on February 29 at the Community Presbyterian Church of Redmond, Oregon. Mrs. Rhodes was born on February 20, 1916 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Roley and Irene Morris. She was raised in Hugo and attended school in the same area. She married Tambo Emmett Rhodes on June 8, 1935.In 1942, Tambo and Mary left Hugo and moved to Santa Paula. Mary worked various jobs and participated in church and community functions, as well as being a member of the Royal Neighbors. She also participated in the quilting club and was a talented seamstress. Mary belonged to the Ventura Missionary Church.Her survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Rhodes of Frazier Park; and adopted daughter Jean Lester; four sisters, Margaret Robison or Wrangell, Alaska, Morene Carroll and Billie Owens of Redmond, Oregon, and Frances Scott of Norman, Oklahoma; and five brothers, Hollis Morris of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Marcus Morris of Canada, Curtis Morris of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Raymond Morris of Redmond, Oregon, and Gene Morris of New Castle, Oklahoma.Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother.Larry James MontoyaLarry James Montoya, age 42, of Ventura, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2000 after a brief illness.Larry was born in Ventura on February 15, 1958. He was a life long county resident, having worked as an assistant manager with the Marriott Hotels.He is survived by his three brothers, Tony Montoya of Santa Paula, and Frank Montoya and Rick Montoya, both of Ventura. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Montoya in 1996 and Lydia Montoya in 1989.A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura.
