By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIn spite of the chill, the holiday edition of Good Morning Santa Paula! brought out members and supporters - even the man with all the toys - at the monthly Chamber of Commerce program that featured the Educator and Member of the Month Awards. Santa, AKA Bob Gonzales, was early handing out candy and sage advice for those young at heart that attended the program, sponsored by Bunnin Automotive Group and Public Relations Director Shane Morger.Carol Yeoman of Barbara Webster School was honored as the Educator of the Month and introduced by Santa Paula Elementary School District Superintendent Dr. Luis Villegas. Yeoman exemplifies an outstanding educator, said Villegas.“As superintendent I have the opportunity to visit every classroom in our district, and I get to see all the pluses and the plus-pluses. But where I see triple and quadruple pluses” is in Yeoman’s combined 1st and 2nd grade classroom.“The joy of teaching is evident in her classroom... what we have in terms of teachers is someone who seeks out every bit of energy out of the students and builds their skills.” A city resident for almost two decades, Yeoman also spent about seven years as a Special Education aide, an “experience that helped her to be the teacher that she is,” noted Villegas.“I’m sure that you inspire the students to be learners and school to be fun,” said Ben Schuck, the GMSP! moderator. “Do they call you Mrs. Yeoman and hug you?” at the beginning of the school day.
Such younger students are “great” said Yeoman. “It doesn’t matter how the day goes; they always love their teachers.”Mupu Grill partner Don Olivier accepted the Chamber Member of the Month Award, noting that the restaurant has “been in town as long I remember... it was a very nice restaurant in the 1930s and 1940s when I was growing up.” The restaurant changed hands and then fell on hard times and was shuttered for several years, until a partnership purchased the East Main Street building.“Now again we have a very nice restaurant, the result of a partnership of about 15 to 20 partners who bought and refurbished the building” that is just east of the city’s yet to be opened Paseo. “If you haven’t been to the Mupu, try it... the food is delicious. I can say that, as I go to a lot of restaurants and we have a good restaurant in town” with the Mupu Grill. As an aside, Olivier noted that “In the first grade I fell in love with my teacher... she was a beauty! I really enjoyed that.”John Macik/Santa Paula Chevrolet provides the plaques for the Chamber of Commerce monthly awards.
