The varsity girls lost one game and won another late last week. They met up with Grace Brethren Thursday and came away with a 7-6 loss in a close contest.Strong pitching by Grace Brethren resulted in eight strikeouts against the Lady Cardinals.Santa Paula couldn’t get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when they made a tremendous comeback by scoring six runs to tie the game. It wasn’t until the ninth inning that Grace scored the winning run with two out on two walks and an RBI single.“That sixth inning comeback was great,” said Santa Paula Coach Henry Jacinto. “I was pleased with our overall hustle and effort.” The Lady Cards had key sixth inning hits from Nicole Sliger, Jaclyn Kohr, Janessa Pulido, Kristin Easley and Talisa Garcia. They scored 6 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and 2 errors by Grace. “They (Grace) had two great hitters and one real good pitcher,” said Jacinto. “That was our best overall game so far.”The second game saw Santa Paula beat Channel Islands 13-8. Nicole Sliger had a three-run home run in the third inning. That was followed by a two-run single off the bat of Lizzette Guzman.
“We hit the ball well and ran the bases well,” said Jacinto. “Our defensive lapses hurt us as only three of Channel Islands’ 8 runs were earned. By and large we had a good week (Four games in four days). We made a lot of improvement. Most of the time we played great defense but in all four games we had some lapses, which is a major concern right now. The real good teams do not have lapses.”Top Santa Paula Hitters: Larissa Luna, 3-4, 2 runs; Lizzette Guzman, 2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs; Nicole Sliger, 1-2, 2 runs, 3 RBIs; Talisa Garcia, 2-4, 2 RBIs; Andrea Sliger, 2-4.Going into this week the Lady Cardinals have a 2-2 overall record.
