Bob Gonzales and Ralph Fernandez have also returned their completed paperwork; it is expected that Fred Robinson would file Thursday afternoon. Two additional newcomers - Sergio Hernandez and Joseph Louis Garces III - pulled nomination documents during the week.As the filing deadline looms, there are now six declared and four potential candidates for the three seats that will be decided by the November 7 General Election. Other potential candidates include Rita Graham and Damien Shilo. The 5 p.m. deadline for filing the completed nomination papers is today, August 11. The paperwork to file for a run for City Council requires the signatures of 20 to 30 registered Santa Paula voters, endorsements verified by the Ventura County Elections Division.
Cook, a Planning Commission veteran and retired Santa Paula Police Department sergeant, has served two terms on the Council, twice as Mayor. Aguirre, a high school principal, and Krause, a retired planner, are each completing their first term on the City Council.Garces is an Oxnard City firefighter; Hernandez’s occupation is unknown. Robinson, a city native, is the executive director of ARC, which serves the developmentally disabled throughout Ventura County. An architect, Fernandez, like Robinson, has been active in We CARE, the group that opposed the Fagan Canyon development, rejected by voters in June.Gonzales is the city’s former police chief and a former trustee for the elementary, high school and community college districts. Graham, who served several terms on the Planning Commission, ran for Council four years ago and is a planner with the Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner’s office. Shilo is a Los Angeles public safety worker and Reserve for the Santa Paula fire and police departments. If a City Council candidate wants to include a statement in the voter information guide, they must also submit a $525 deposit at the time they file nomination papers... a portion of the deposit can be returned, depending on how many candidate statements are published in the guide. Since the three Council incumbents are officially in the race, the filing deadline will not be extended.
