By Susan BranhamSanta Paula TimesThe Santa Paula Vons employees have a good idea. “My employees decided to do something a little out of the paradigm, thinking outside the box,” Store Manager Frank Ybarra said. The result is a fun afternoon for a good cause. This Sunday, October 29, Vons parking lot will be the site of a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, the culmination of a month’s efforts by Vons workers to make a difference.“They’re trying to make an impact,” said Ybarra. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a team effort has gone into fundraising with sales of bracelets, leaflets, and pins crafted by Vons workers. Proceeds from the sales, and from Sunday’s event, will benefit local breast cancer awareness organizations. A drawing with prizes donated by local businesses, a barbeque, and even a pie throwing contest will help raise funds. “My employees have gone all out, asking local organizations for gift certificates and donations for the drawing,” Ybarra said. Linda Reyes and Christina Reyes volunteered their time to help collect the donations. “The response from the community has been wonderful,” Linda Reyes said.
Sunday’s drawing prizes include a trip to Magic Mountain, dinner at local restaurants and Mary Kay beauty products, over twenty prizes in all. Participants can select which prizes they want to try for. Ticket prices range from one ticket for $1 to 40 tickets for $20. Another drawing will be held for a special prize - dinner with Santa Paula firefighters.“It’s a great cause,” Ybarra said. “Lots of our employees will be volunteering their support on Sunday. There has been a lot of effort through our personnel, Rosie Villa and Assistant Manager Denia Wheeler. It is a team effort.”Frank Ybarra will be volunteering his time Sunday, as well. Ybarra, Santa Paula Chief of Police McKinnon and other dignitaries will be recipients in the Pie Toss. “I want to invite everyone to help raise funds,” Ybarra said.In addition to hot dogs and hamburgers, Sunday’s event will offer snow cones, nachos and popcorn. Face painting will be part of the fun, and there will also be a bake sale. The fundraiser runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 29. “Come and have fun, and bring your family,” Ybarra said.
