Oak Park may have thought they were going to have an easy time of it at Santa Paula Friday night. That was not the case as the Cardinal varsity played probably their best game yet. The Eagles went on to win the contest 41-14.Oak Park got a big surprise in the first half as Santa Paula played the game they should have played all season with few mistakes. Quinn Pawlick did much of the running for the Cards and scored the only two TDs of the game for his team. The Eagles scored early in the game, hitting the Cardinal end zone just about two minutes into the first quarter. Oak Park came back with the ball but was forced to punt on a fourth down. Pawlick blocked the punt and then recovered the loose ball in the end zone, tying the game at 7-7. The Eagles answered by blocking Mike Vera’s punt and recovered the ball to go ahead 14-7.Just a few minutes into the second quarter the Cards pushed downfield over 60 yards and Pawlick scored from 1-yard out. A Santa Paula fumble seemed to take the steam out of the Cardinal engine and Oak Park gathered momentum, going into the half with a 28-14 lead.In the third quarter the Eagles got into the Santa Paula end zone two more times. The Santa Paula defense stopped the Oak Park push in the fourth quarter.
“We were facing the #2 ranked team in the division, who’s only loss came to the #1 team in the division,” Coach Ed Gomez said. “On paper it didn’t look to be much of a match up, but we came out and played hard.”Gomez said that they saw that we could compete with one of the top teams in the division; when they execute. “Unfortunately we continue to give up big plays that lead to shifts in momentum,” he added. “We have learned a lot about ourselves and the game this year. If we take these lessons and work hard in the off season there is tremendous potential for next season.”Gomez notes that Oaks Christian is coming to town this week. “They are ranked at or near the top of every poll,” he said. “I think they’d be in the top five of the BCS if they would upgrade their schedule. They are without a doubt THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL TEAM in Ventura County, California, and the Nation. We could whine and complain about equity and releaging, but the bottom line is we have a game to play. We are going to suit up and play to the best of our ability.”
