The Chamber of Commerce sponsored event - hosted by Steve Smead Insurance - was held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport.“I want to thank you for highlighting our teachers,” said SPHS Principal Tony Gaitan, who noted that Educator of the Month Dora Madrigal is admired by both students and her peers as an “outstanding teacher at our high school.” Madrigal is not only a Spanish teacher, but also is “an advanced placement teacher” who has demonstrated commitment to producing top-flight students. “Over the last years her success rate has been 95 percent... she should also be commended for outstanding leadership” as department chair who increased the number of classes.“Dora is a person with determination and self-motivation” who garnered her education and advanced degrees at the University of California Santa Barbara. So skilled is Madrigal - who has taught at SPHS for 14 years - that she has also been a university instructor.
“She has made an impact on hundreds and hundreds of students” in the classroom, as well as being the advisor for the Migrant Student Program, Site Leadership Team and the SPHS Agricultural Academy. A highly respected mentor, Madrigal has also been proven an effective leader for statewide educational issues, and participated in the development of the SPHS curriculum, noted Gaitan.“This morning Dora is being honored for her leadership as an outstanding educator,” and her reputation as same is unbeatable, said Gaitan.GMSP Moderator Ben Schuck asked if Madrigal had any funny classroom stories to tell. Madrigal said that one incident that caught her greatly by surprise was the remark by a student “who stood up and said ‘My grandmother sends her greetings.’ I thought, ‘I haven’t been here that long!’ and when he asked if I remembered his grandmother,” it turned out that she had also worked at SPHS. “Her last year was my first year,” Madrigal noted with a laugh.Madrigal was presented with the Educator of the Month plaque provided by John Macik/Santa Paula Chevrolet.
