The annual Kiwanis Club Citrus Festival is gearing up to fill Veterans Park with plenty of people to enjoy a myriad of fun things to do at the new, revamped and expanded event being introduced this weekend. There will be more of an emphasis on a street fair type of festival, said Chairman David Luna of the Kiwanis Club, which is holding the Citrus Festival for the 33rd year.“We’ll have over 30 vendors and we’re adding more as we speak,” including arts and crafts, entertainment and information booths, Luna said.Of course, the Citrus Festival will offer its usual array of fun carnival rides, plenty of great food and games, including the Kiwanis Bingo Booth, one of the event’s most popular attractions. The Citrus Festival will be held Friday, July 14 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, July 16 from noon to 9 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park across from City Hall on East Ventura Street, between 10th and Mill streets.“It’s a family event although it’s going to be structured differently as in the past,” said Luna, including having all carnival rides - more than ever before - located in the park area and clustered food booths on Ventura Street.Luna promises carnival thrills, lights and music as well as live musical entertainment, a delicious array of food (cotton candy, corn dogs, tri-tip sandwiches, traditional Mexican fare, goodies-goodies-goodies!), games, Citrus Festival tee-shirts available for purchase, and arts and crafts shopping opportunities.“It’s going to be a real nice event, really, really nice,” reflecting the almost year that Luna and Kiwanis Club members have spent on planning.
Also new this year is Special Events Coordinator Pam Colvard who has been working with the Kiwanis Club and Luna on implementing the event’s new and expanded direction. “Pam has really been a big help to us,” said Luna. All in all, “We’re really looking forward to a neat Citrus Festival, especially with this new, expanded format. There will be plenty of entertainment each day with live bands, many vendors, a different Citrus Festival. But the carnival is the heart of the event, provides the backdrop for the whole new Citrus Festival atmosphere. . .and what can be more fun than that?”The Santa Paula Girls Basketball Team is using advance carnival ride ticket sales as a joint fundraiser with the Kiwanis Club: tickets are 20 for $10; on site tickets will cost $14 for 20 tickets. SPHS Girls Basketball Team members are selling tickets from noon to 4 p.m. outside two area markets, Vons and Tresierras. For more information, contact Colvard at 525-9820.
