X-TRA, a contemporary art quarterly magazine co-founded by Santa Paula resident Ellen Birrell, has been awarded a three-year grant of $100,000 from the Andy Warhol Foundation. Selected through a nomination-based process for their ambition, commitment and strong editorial vision, X-TRA is one of only eight nonprofit journals in the country to receive a Warhol Foundation Arts Writing Initiative Award. X-TRA has been published quarterly since its inception and is the longest running critical art journal in the region.Together with co-founder Stephen Berens, Birrell, a professor at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, designed X-TRA as an outlet for artists and writers to engage in critical discourse about contemporary art and the visual arts culture in Los Angeles. It is distributed nationwide through art and academic institutions, as well as retail outlets, and currently has a readership of 15,000 per issue. With the support of the Warhol grant, the magazine will introduce its redesign in September 2007. The new, improved version of X-TRA will include four-color printing on high-quality stock as well as museum quality reproductions on interior pages.
Funded in part by a grant from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the prestigious award has also been heralded by Laura Zucker, executive director of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. “X-TRA magazine has provided an important voice for visual artists in Los Angeles since 1997,” says Zucker. “Now that our region is being recognized as one of the most vibrant centers of contemporary art in the world, the need for an LA-based art journal is greater than ever. Congratulations to X-TRA, Ellen Birrell, Stephen Berens and all the talented people associated with X-TRA on the generous support from the Andy Warhol Foundation. Their $100,000 grant should help grow readership exponentially.”The publication is also supported by grants from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, the Pasadena Arts Alliance, and the Peter Norton Family Foundation.
