By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt will be smooth sailing - or at least driving - on Santa Paula Street in August, after the City Council approved almost $600,000 for a variety of roadwork along the historic thoroughfare. “We’re very pleased, I repeat very pleased” that the long awaited project is being finalized, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said at the June 4 Council meeting.According to the report by Public Works Director/City Engineer Cliff Finley, the project will be paid for with a combination of about $523,000 in Federal STP Grant Funds and a city match of approximately $68,000. The total estimate includes a 20 percent construction contingency. The funding for the project was included in the 2006-2007 budget. Initially approved in August 2006, the project will provide a slurry seal overlay on Santa Paula Street from Dean Drive to Bradley Street.
More intensive work includes repaving the road on Santa Paula Street from Blanchard Avenue to 10th Street, and reconstruction of the thoroughfare from Atmore Avenue to Dean Drive and Bradley Street to Blanchard Avenue. Repairs are expected to begin in July and end in about mid-August.Streets have been the priority of several Councils, but the cost of the projects - largely funded by grant funds - has necessitated a piecemeal approach by the city. The funding for the latest project is a combination of Transportation Equity Act (TEA 21) and local transportation funds.Berry General Engineering of Ventura was the successful bidder out of the four companies that submitted proposals; in all, seven contractors had picked up plans and specifications. Nearly $200,000 in federal funds will be set aside for future repairs of other city streets.
