City Council gives direction for new restaurant planned for 10th Street

Florence Elwell, the owner of Tia Babe's Restaurant on Harvard Boulevard, has been given the go-ahead to proceed with plans for a new, larger restaurant on 10th Street, just below Main.

At the conclusion of the meeting the council directed staff to come back with the plans originally submitted to the Planning Department as well as the revised plans incorporating comments made by the council and staff.The original plans complied with development standards, with the exception of parking. The original proposed square footage was 3,503.
The revised plans depict a Spanish traditional design, including variations in roof heights and building form. The new square footage totals 6,237 square feet. The layout is designed to provide an additional seating area for the restaurant or retail space.The purpose of the item on Monday’s agenda was for concept review. This allowed the council to give input on the plans and to provide direction to the applicant and staff regarding which proposal is preferred. The new plans will now through the regular planning process.Councilmember Ralph Fernandez said, “This particular plan has more of what we are after. Overall I like the project a lot.” Councilmember Bob Gonzales said he would prefer her original plan. “She should be able to build what she wants,” he said. Mayor Ray Luna said, “I was sold on the first plan.”In the end, the council unanimously agreed that the applicant should move forward with the larger, revised plan.
