By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA neighborhood was disrupted Sunday when a suspected shooter was believed to be holed up inside an Acacia Road residence, but, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman, once the SPPD Special Response Team made a forced entry there was no sign of the subject. The December 16 incident involved barricading the home where the suspect had fled and the setting up of an emergency command post. The SPPD armored Dragoon, a Santa Paula Fire Department engine and an ambulance also responded, and SPPD snipers set up on rooftops adjoining the property. Sergeant Ish Cordero said the incident started at about 12:37 p.m., when the SPPD received reports of shots fired in the area of Harvard Boulevard and Acacia Road.Upon the arrival of SPPD officers, “Witnesses were pointing towards the 300 block of Acacia Road, and another witness pointed to the address” where the suspected shooter, carrying a black handgun, had fled up the driveway of 324 Acacia Rd. to the residence located at 324 1/2 Acacia Road. “When officers went to that specific address, a subject” who matched the description given by witnesses “came out, but when he saw the officers he popped back” inside the residence, noted Cordero.Other SPPD officers arrived to assist in securing the residence in an attempt to contain the suspect, and ordered the homes on each side of the residence evacuated. Other area residents were asked to lock down and stay inside their homes. Acacia Road was also closed to traffic.
Cordero said “A female resident” of the address where the suspect had fled “was contacted via telephone, and confirmed no one was supposed to be home and that no male subjects lived at the residence.” Due to the nature of the call, the SPPD Special Response Team was called to respond.“Once the Special Response Team arrived and was briefed, entry was made into the residence and searched for any suspects. No suspects were found inside the residence,” said Cordero. “We believe he was long gone,” fleeing out the back door, “by the time the other officers got there.”And, noted Cordero, the “suspect could have lived there, but the resident wouldn’t tell us. We received enough calls on the incident to show that there had been gunfire, we’ve received information during the investigation as to the possible suspect, and we are pursuing those leads.”The investigation is continuing on this matter. Any one with any information is asked to call Santa Paula Police Detective Boggess at 525-4474, or “call the SPPD Hotline at 933-4253-1-# (pound) and leave anonymous information.” Cordero said that those with information can also call “Crime Stoppers anonymous hotline at 524-0907 and be eligible for a reward” if the information received results in a conviction.
