Man arrested after he is tasered and then bitten by K-9

Santa Paula Police arrested a bicyclist for a variety of charges on September 1, after he allegedly led them on a wild chase, assaulted an officer, was tasered and then bitten by a Ventura County Sheriff’s K-9 - twice.

The incident occurred Monday evening - Labor Day - at approximately 11:18 p.m., according to SPPD Sergeant Jimmy Fogata.SPPD Senior Officer Cody Madison contacted suspect Armando Hernandez for a “minor bicycle violation,” said Fogata. “When the officer patted him down they found an illegal switchblade knife,” and then, said Lieutenant Carlos Juarez, before Madison could handcuff him Hernandez took off and began climbing a chain link fence at Isbell Middle School, located at 4th Street near East Harvard Boulevard.Fogata said officers were able to grab a hold of Hernandez, “However he began striking one of the officers in an attempt to get away.” Hernandez was tased, but was able to make it over the fence and onto the campus when the SPPD set up a perimeter on the school grounds.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Deputy Scott Dufner with K-9 Hanno responded to assist with the search, and after a short while Hernandez was found hiding in some bushes. Fogata said after Hernandez refused to come out the K-9 was deployed, and “bit the suspect twice before he was taken into custody.”Once in custody, officers found Hernandez was in possession of 3.5 grams of methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe. Hernandez was transported to Ventura County Jail and charged with felony resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer, transporting a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a smoking device, possession of a switchblade knife, and the violation he was originally stopped for - riding a bicycle at night without a light.Bail for Hernandez was set at $50,000.
