The Buenaventura Swim Club hosted the Long Course Season Opener swim meet on March 6th and 7th at the Ventura Aquatic Center.

There were close to 560 participants from Ventura County and the surrounding area. Heritage Valley Aquatics had 18 swimmers compete in this two-day event for a total of 62 splashes.

This was the first long course meet for many of the swimmers and although they didn’t mind the length of the pool so much, the cold weather and the rain was not their idea of fun. However, with 90% new or best times, both HVA coaches  and swimmers were happy with the results.

Roman Becher, 8, had 3 first place finishes in the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, and 50 butterfly. He also finished second in both the 100 free and 50 backstroke and received 3rd place in the 100 back. He moved out of the beginning “White” division in all events by achieving faster times and will now be competing in the “Red” division in future meets. Sibling, Zoe Becher, 11, swam in 7 events this weekend and got four new times and three new best times. Zoe dropped over fifteen seconds in her 100 back. Tom Becher, 13, got a “Red” time and a 3rd place finish in his 100 meter breast with a time of 1:36.31.

Sophiamarie Cain, 15, took a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 200 Individual Medley, 100 breast, and 100 free respectively. Thomas Cain,13, dropped close to 5 seconds in the 100 breast with a time of 1:44.70 and received a  7th place finish. Dominic Cain, 10, shaved over 32 seconds off of his times in three events. Peter Cain, 7, made a great showing in his first meet ever with two 4th place finishes in the 50 fly and 50 back and a 6th in the 100 free.

Paul Collins finished 3rd in the 100 free and 5th in the 200 IM, while sister Sophie Collins, 15, improved over 2 seconds in each of her three events. She also earned 2nd place in all three events. Thomas Kelly, 16, won 1st place in the 100 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM. Both Anna Van Hecke, 18,  and Teresa Letteney, 15, scored in the top five in the 100 free and the 100 breast. Taylor Wreesman, 9, dropped over 20 seconds in her three events on Sunday as well.
