Varsity coach David Urias said the Soph/Frosh and JV teams played very well defensively keeping the other teams off the scoreboard. “As for us, our guys made the adjustments defensively and offensively to enable us the opportunity to win this particular game,” he said. “We gave up 20 points in the second half including overtime. The team believes that they can overcome anything and do not get flustered. Obviously, while we need to score, defense is what wins games.”
Cardinal boys sweep Malibu in league opener
Santa Paula traveled to Malibu for their first league contest and the Sharks were swept by the Cardinals at all levels of play.
The Cardinals Soph-Frosh defeated the Sharks 54 - 38. Santa Paula outscored Malibu 21 to 6 in the final quarter to highlight their come from behind victory. Christian Garcia, 22 points, 5 steals; Nicolas Aguilera, 15 points, 6 rebounds; Juan Diaz, 7 points, 4 rebounds; Corey Peck, 5 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals; Jessie Rios, 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals; Justin Gaeta, 4 points, 2 steals; Phillip Arellano, 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal.
Santa Paula JV beat Malibu 49 to 40. The Cardinals pressure defense forced the Sharks into nine turnovers. Highlights for Santa Paula were Miguel Villa, 19 points, 2 steals; Brandon Casas, 17 points, 3 rebounds, 5 steals; Fidel Estrada, 5 points, 1 steal; Elmer Ramirez, 4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocked shots; Eddie Perez, 3 points; Christian Estebes, 1 point. The Cardinals committed 26 turnovers but shot 15 for 28 from the free throw line. The Santa Paula JV has not lost a game this season.
The Cardinal varsity out shot the Sharks 51 to 46 in a thrilling overtime Friday evening contest. The Cardinals rallied from a 26 - 17 halftime deficit to send the game into overtime. The Cardinals mounted a strong fourth quarter challenge by out scoring the Sharks 16 to 9. Gabe Diaz scored six of the Cardinal eight points in overtime. He scored 15 points (3 outside 3 point bombs), six for eight from the charity strip to highlight the Cardinal attack; Taylor Casas, 9 points, 4 rebounds; Eduardo Jimenez, 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals; Tim Garcia, 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal; Josh Garay, 7 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal; Jesse Aguilar, 2 points. Santa Paula made 21 of 28 attempts from the free throw line. The Cardinal record is now 9 - 6. They play at Carpinteria tonight.
