The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Ventura County announced the recipients of the 2011 WIB Awards at its June 23 meeting held at the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 770 in Camarillo. The annual awards are given to individuals, employers and organizations in the community who have played an important role in building a strong workforce in Ventura County.

 WIB Champion for Prosperity Awards

Two Champion for Prosperity Awards were presented to a public entity and a private business, each for their support of workforce development in Ventura County through job creation and retention.

The first winner was Vic Anselmo, president of Applied Powdercoat, an Oxnard manufacturer. With worker training funded through state and WIB-supported manufacturing industry programs, Applied Powdercoat became a leaner manufacturing organization. Cost savings and improved productivity enabled the company to hire additional employees.

Resident Services Department, Housing Authority of the City of Buenaventura also was recognized for its innovative leadership role in creating and implementing two customized residential training programs: Green Construction and Paint Plus. In both programs, participants received credentialed training resulting in increased wages and job placement.

“Our Prosperity Award winners are terrific examples of the economic benefit of skills development to both the employer and employee,” said Steve Kinney, president, Economic Development Corporation of Oxnard and WIB Chair.

 WIB Leadership Award

The WIB Leadership Award is given to an individual who embodies the spirit and purpose of workforce development in Ventura County, a role model who takes on and solves workforce challenges.

This year’s winner, Tony Skinner, is a business representative with the Tri-Counties Building and Construction, AFL-CIO and president of the ACE Charter High School Board of Directors. “We are proud to acknowledge Tony for his extraordinary efforts in bringing ACE Charter High School from a dream to a reality,” said Kinney.  “His dedication and ability to work with many groups enabled this innovative and relevant educational program in architecture, construction, and engineering to offer exciting opportunities to our workforce of the future.”

 WIB Collaborative Action Awards

The WIB announced two WIB Collaborative Action Awards. The award goes to partnerships that help meet employer needs or improve the relevance and capacity of education and workforce training in Ventura County.

Recognized were the 11 city and county representatives of the Economic Development Collaborative of Ventura County’s (EDC-VC), Economic Development Roundtable. The representatives were acknowledged for their spirit of collaboration in the “Ventura County - Grow Your Business, Live Your Life” business expansion and retention initiative. The award is shared by Elisabeth Amador, Santa Paula; Greg Brown, Port Hueneme; John Frasier, Camarillo; Brian Gabler, Simi Valley; Steve Kinney, Oxnard; Steve McClary, Ojai; David Moe, Moorpark; Yvonne Quiring, Fillmore; Donna Plummer, County of Ventura; Gary Wartik, Thousand Oaks and Sid White, Ventura.

“Thanks to their advocacy within their jurisdictions and commitment to the shared benefit of a regional effort, the Ventura County community engaged in a collaborative outreach effort to attract and retain jobs,” said Cheryl Moore, executive director of the WIB.

The second WIB Collaborative Action Award recognized Jerry Beckerman, CEO of Segue Career Mentors, for organizing volunteers from a variety of careers to speak in local classrooms to empower, inspire and motivate students to see the relevance of education for their lives.

“Speakers’ real-world stories about their paths to their current careers give students hope and key lessons about the road of life and the future,” said Stan Mantooth, WIB board member and Ventura County Superintendent of Schools.

“All of this year’s WIB Award Winners exemplify the WIB’s commitment to workforce development in Ventura County,” said Moore.
