Small swarm of seismic activity between Santa Paula and Fillmore

A small swarm of earthquakes struck between Santa Paula and Fillmore Sunday evening, with the biggest event a 2.3 magnitude followed by increasingly smaller aftershocks.

According to the California Integrated Seismic Net/US Geological Survey/Caltech the August 7 seismic activity started with a 2.3 magnitude earthquake that struck at 8:22 p.m. 

The activity was mapped six miles north northeast of Santa Paula and six miles west-northwest of Fillmore in the Timber Canyon Road area. The trembler was located 34.428°N, 119.014°W and measured at a depth of 8.5 miles. 

The first aftershock hit at 8:49 p.m. and was measured as a 1.8 magnitude. It was again centered about six miles from both Santa Paula and Fillmore, and was located at 34.425°N, 119.012°W with a depth measured at 8.5 miles.

At 11:12 p.m. a 1.4 magnitude aftershock was recorded at almost the exact same location between Santa Paula and Fillmore. It was mapped 34.429°N, 119.020°W but was measured at a greater depth, 9.4 miles. 

All of Sunday’s seismic activity occurred in the vicinity of the San Cayetano Fault that ranges south of Santa Paula through much of the Santa Clara River Valley.
