Santa Paula High School receives "School of Excellence Award" and national recognition

Santa Paula High School was selected as one of the five schools to receive the 1999 School of Excellence award. Each year Hispanic Magazine recognizes five outstanding schools that offer outstanding and unique programs with significant impact on preparing our youth for the 21st century.The schools are selected based on nine components: student achievement, curriculum, leadership, environment, organizational vitality, daily attendance records, awards attained, student retention and post-graduation results. The School of Excellence award is now in its sixth year.Principal Gaitan was delighted to hear from Hispanic Magazine earlier this month. He stated that a committee is planning a celebration ceremony in honor of this national award. Hispanic Magazine informed Mr. Gaitan that schools from throughout the United States applied for this national recognition award.During the month of June, Linda Ramirez, a consultant for Hispanic Magazine, contacted Principal Gaitan. She informed him that she had researched high schools and found Santa Paula High School's Accountability Report Card on the Internet. She immediately contacted SPHS to request more information because she was planning to nominate Santa Paula High School for the School of Excellence award. Mr. Gaitan prepared a packet of information and submitted the necessary documents.On September 9, Mr. Gaitan received the phone call from Hispanic Magazine to inform him that Santa Paula High School had been selected to receive the award. Hispanic Magazine has invited Principal Antonio J. Gaitan to attend the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on October 27.Hispanic Magazine is a national magazine for professionals, entrepreneurs, corporate executives and students. Now in its twelfth year, Hispanic Magazine has won wide acceptance among both readers and advertisers, and has a national circulation of over 250,000 copies.
Santa Paula High School's list of school year accomplishments includes awarded State Distinguished School Honorable Mention for the 1998-99 school year, awarded a six year accreditation by the WASC visiting committee, and recognized by Time Magazine in the September 14th issue.As well as having partnerships with University of California, Santa Barbara, California State University Channel Islands, California Lutheran University, and Ventura Community College, the number of students participating in the State Golden State exams, PSAT exams, SAT exams and Advanced Placement exams has increased.Last school year Santa Paula High was awarded over $250,000 in grants allocations for all students. The high school accomplishment list includes 44 of their top accomplishments.
