The University of California, California State University and the Armed Forces also provided presenters for the Career Fair. The presenters arrived between 7:30 and 8 a.m. in the Career Center at SPHS. As they arrived, enthusiastic students were on hand to greet them and provide assistance with sign-ins, refreshments, carrying materials, and escorting them to their rooms. The Student Body Association (SBA) made decorative bags filled with snacks for the presenters. After the sessions were completed, the Garden Market catered lunch. One presenter, Nash Andnad III, MESA counseling coordinator at University of California, Santa Barbara, exclaimed, “I had a great experience today at the Career Fair!” Cristina Menzie, SPHS junior, also had a great day at the Career Fair. On the University of California, Santa Cruz presentation, the first one she attended, Menzie says, “It was very informative, providing information on how to choose the right university for a student’s individual educational goals.”
Menzie also attended a presentation on Hispanic journalism, commenting, “It was really interesting explaining the production of a magazine. The presenter moved here from Mexico when she was 16 and worked very hard to become accomplished. She was very inspirational to us, sending the message that hard work pays off.”Some of the students attended a session on psychology presented by the District psychologist. Menzie says, “She did a really good job of thoroughly explaining what she does and what is available in this field. She pointed out that the study of psychology is beneficial in every facet of life.”SPHS students felt that the Career Fair was very helpful and inspirational, providing them with information to help them make career choices and to choose educational paths that will prepare them to meet the challenges of obtaining these careers. Students were attentive, enthusiastic, and left the Career Fair with a feeling that they will find their place in this world.
