Museum in Santa Paula. For the eighth year, artist and musician Xavier Montes has arranged a vibrant program of music and dance at the site of the eighth Annual De Colores Art Show, an art show he first created in 1995 and has curated annually ever since. This year’s De Colores Celebration is part of Santa Paula’s Centennial festivities.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2002, the public is invited to a celebration of Latino art, music and culture at the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula. For the eighth year, artist and musician Xavier Montes has arranged a vibrant program of music and dance at the site of the eighth Annual De Colores Art Show, an art show he first created in 1995 and has curated annually ever since. This year’s De Colores Celebration is part of Santa Paula’s Centennial festivities. The festivities this year take place on the Main Street Stage, along the Main Street Vendor Area, in the Museum’s Courtyard, and in two Museum Gallery Rooms. Appearing on the Main Street Stage, from 3 to 5 p.m., is the Los Angeles Salsa Band, Orquesta Charangoa. Playing Cuban-style salsa music, Orquesta Charangoa has opened for “Los Van Van” and has played with Israel Lopez Cachao. They’ve drawn huge crowds at the L.A. Salsa Festival, the African Marketplace and the L.A. CubanFestival. The leader of Orquesta Charangoa, Fay Roberts, studied music in Havana, Cuba with legendary flutist Richard Egues (of Orquesta Aragon fame.) While Orquesta Charangoa plays, professional salsa dancers will dance and visitors to the museum will be encouraged to join in. The day of festivities at the Museum begins with a traditional Aztec blessing in the Museum Courtyard, from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m., performed by the dance troupe Nahui Ollin. From 1 to 3 p.m., a rare gathering of Santa Paula’s finest veteran Mexican musicians will take place on the Main Street Stage. Many of these talented musicians, both men and women, have played together since the 1940s. Over the past 60 years, they have also taught young musicians traditional boleros, rancheras and corridos. Some of the trio and duet musicians playing are Joe “Gotin” Ramirez., Simon “Mon” Hernandez, Carlos
Leal, Lalo and Lola Moreno, Otilio and Janet Robles, Ruben Sanchez, and Richard “El Surdo” Corral. The contribution of these musicians will be honored during the festivities.Mexican arts and crafts vendors and a children’s arts and crafts activity will be featured in the Main Street Vendor Area. Author Amada Perez will autograph her books in the Main Street Vendor Area. Perez is an elementary school teacher and author of “My Very Own Room” (Mi Propio Cuartito) and “My Diary From Here to There” (Mi Diario de Aqui Hasta Alla). From 11 to 5, two Gallery Rooms of the Museum will feature the De Colores Art Show. Curator Xavier Montes has gathered thought-provoking artworks from around Southern California for the exhibit. Works by Manuel Unzuerta,Virginia Ashby Valdez, Steve Ramirez, Gail Pidduck, Xavier Montes, Carmen Abelleira-White, Annette Padilla, Judy Klement, Maribel Hernandez, Michele Flores, Arturo Perez, Eugene Huguez, Chris Martinez, Sylvia Raz, Malissa Szot, Teresa Vega, Elva DeLeon, Sergio Hernandez, Felix Perez are on display. Many of the artworks are for sale. From 1 to 3 p.m., Diane Renee Macdonell will play Celtic Harp in the Gallery Rooms. Refreshments for the De Colores Celebration will provided by Hozy’s Santa Paula Grill and by Manuel and Lola Mendez. The Eighth Annual De Colores Art Show is open at the Museum from April 7 through May 19, 2002.The California Oil Museum is located at the corner of 10th and Main Street in Santa Paula. It is15 minutes east of Ventura and 30 minutes west of Valencia on Highway 126. Admission to the Museum is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
