The students in Lanny Kaufer’s biology class have been busy planting flowers throughout the main Santa Paula High School campus. Most recently they have planted a variety of petunias, Santa Paula’s city flower, on the lower court of Cardinal Way.During the fall of 2001, Mr. Kaufer and his students had the opportunity to work with Peter Tolley, plant operations manager for Twyford Plant Lab in Santa Paula. The Twyford Plant Lab generously donated 250 impatiens to the high school. Mr. Tolley assisted the students in readying the greenhouse to receive the plants, and brought fertilizer, pots and other materials to get the project underway.“What makes the impatiens so special is that they are clones,” stated Mr. Kaufer. “These plants were germinated from one cell of a plant.” The plants may be seen surrounding the water fountain on Center Court.
Class instruction covers the full cycle of plant life, including the type of plant, soil, pruning, watering, and how to care for and nurture the plant from a seed to the mature plant. When it is time to plant the flowers, Mr. Kaufer and the students discuss how to lay out the flowers. The students also receive instruction on how to use and care for the various tools and equipment associated with gardening. While not all students enjoyed “getting their hands dirty,” they have become very protective of their plants, asking other students to not step on the plants or toss trash in the flowerbeds. “Through the efforts of Mr. Kaufer, the awareness of the beautification of the campus has increased among his students,” said SPHS Principal Tony Gaitan.
