McKevett’s second-grade students in Rick Valencia[s room can’t wait until it’s their turn to take music lessons on the keyboards in Donna Nelson’s music class.Because there are not enough keyboards to go around to all of the children in the class part of the children sing notes while the others play those same notes on the keyboard.“Peter Rabbit, Peter Rabbit, hop, hop, hop! Make you ears go flop, flop, flop!” the children chant. As you can see by the expression on Christina Lizarraga, left, and Greer Denato’s faces, they are concentrating on what Nelson is explaining to the class and making sure they are pressing the correct set of black keys as the other part of the class chant in voices representing papa, mama, and little baby rabbit too!!
Nelson, Santa Paula Elementary School District music resource specialist, said “People ask me about the noise created by 20 children experimenting together on these Casios and Yamahas and I say “noise - what noise”? All I can see is the light in their eyes and the smiles on their faces! That’s not noise!”If you have a keyboard taking up space in your garage, house, or know someone who has one and would like to make it possible for another child to play in class, please call Donna Nelson at 933-1446. Keyboards that are donated are used in the music program at the school..
