By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe executive director of the Chamber of Commerce told the City Council that the business group is looking forward to a new partnership symbolized by a Redevelopment Agency grant that will benefit the local economy.“The chamber would like to thank you for your generous funding to allow our office to be open on weekends,” said Chamber Executive Director Jeanette Maland at the May 5th meeting. The $1,500 grant allows the chamber to hire a person part-time on weekends to “greet and provide first-class service one-on-one,” to visitors to Santa Paula including potential businesses, said Maland.“On behalf of the 21 member board of directors and the over 300 chamber members, over 1,000 people, I thank you.”
Maland noted that on a personal level she was also thankful: “What a great thing you’ve done for us, we’re all looking to build economic vitality in Santa Paula. The chamber does a great deal of that,” through office outreach efforts, noted Maland, and the city has become increasing active in tackling business attraction and retention as well as economic revitalization efforts.“We get comments on a daily basis on what a great town Santa Paula, the great weather. . .and we have a fantastic population here, loyal and long-term. I’m thrilled that the city and chamber are walking down this road together.”“At least we’re going to save postage,” noted Mayor John Procter as he presented Maland with the $1,500 check. The grant stipulates that the chamber share any profits from selling Santa Paula related merchandise at its Depot office. On weekends the chamber weekend staffer will also greet those who ride into town on the Fillmore & Western Railway, providing information on local sights and things to do while visiting Santa Paula.
