By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesHaving a great time on New Year’s Eve in a unique venue and planning to tackle that tax return were among the subjects at the December Good Morning Santa Paula! Shane Morger of Bunnin Automotive – which owns numerous dealerships throughout Ventura County – hosted the Chamber of Commerce sponsored event held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport.Peggy Higgins noted that “When you do an event you build from the ground up,” and although there are no venues available locally for the chamber sponsored New Year’s Eve celebration one was created at the Limoneira Mercantile. Located on the corner of Highway 126 and Hallock Drive, Higgins said the party will feature “tents with forced air heating, strolling mariachis, a swing band and rock and roll,” performed by noted county entertainers.Twenty-two Santa Clara River Valley area restaurants will provide the food for the celebration, a collaboration of volunteers from Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru. “It’s going to be just an awesome event,” said Higgins. “Tickets are $50 each and I would challenge each of you to find” such a multi-faceted event that features so much for so little.
Partygoers will park in the Lemonwood Industrial Park area (on the south side of Highway 126) and taken to the party on a heated old-fashioned shuttle. “We’re going to have a blast on New Year’s Eve,” and tickets are available at several locations throughout the city, including the Chamber of Commerce where phone credit card orders can be placed, Higgins noted. Now is the time to start preparing for tax time, said CPA Stephen McFadden of Santa Paula. Good news for teachers is that they will again get the $250 deduction “above the line for school supplies purchased, but it should be more for the work that teachers do,” said McFadden. The IRS is on the prowl to expose abusive tax shelters, less than honest write-offs for donated vehicles and other gifts that can turn into deductions. If you purchase drugs from Canada you cannot include the price as a medical expense on your tax return, noted McFadden. Those with an IRA can still make a contribution – the maximum is $3,000, $3,500 for those 50 years old and up – by April 15, 2005 for tax year 2004.Good news/bad news is that the government has “closed the door on the Hummer deduction; before, if you purchased an auto” weighing more than 6,000 pounds it could be deducted. “It’s up to 14,000 pounds now, so if you need a Hummer for your business,” that is the one to buy, McFadden said with a laugh.
