The Santa Paula’s Girls’ wrestling team hosted the 4th Annual Lady Cardinals Team Dual Tournament last weekend. The 8-team dual format provided excellent wrestling on four mats continuously throughout the day. Teams traveled from as far as San Diego and Long Beach to attend the very tough and well-run tournament.
The eleven participating teams were Pacifica (Oxnard), Pioneer Valley (Santa Maria), Nordhoff (Ojai), Channel Islands (Oxnard), Milikan (Long Beach), Steele Canyon (Spring Valley), Panorama City (Los Angeles), Fillmore, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and of course Santa Paula.
At the end of the day, the Santa Paula girls finished the tournament undefeated at 5-0 to claim the 1st place Championship. “ I was very proud of all my girls,” said Coach Mark Lopez. “They wrestled tough and sacrificed a lot to make their weight class to help earn the team a trophy. This was a team tournament, and this was evident when our senior Jennifer Juarez wrestled up a weight class and sacrificed her 1st place medal to ensure our team the win. A selfless act like that is what makes our team a family and the proof is in the results. This is our first time to win 1st place since we’ve offered this competitive & grueling tournament.”
