Santa Paula girls capture 4th place in Fillmore tournament

The Santa Paula girls’ varsity team competed in the Jolene Stethem Varsity Basketball Tournament last week. The Lady Cardinals came away from the four days of play with fourth place in the tourney.The girls started out strong, defeating Grace Brethren 40-27. Santa Paula led from the start, going into the halftime break with a 19-15 edge. Santa Paula is lacking in height this year but a strong defense stopped Grace Brethren from catching the Lady Cards.The Santa Paula girls showed their strength again against Faith Baptist, with a 49-33 victory. At the half the Lady Cardinals were ahead 29-10. Erika Mora led the scoring with 10 points. Nicole Sliger had 9 and Ashley Teasdale hit for 8 points.Disaster struck in the third game, when the Lady Cards lost to Fillmore 72-18. Fillmore’s speed and height overwhelmed Santa Paula.
In the final game, Santa Paula fought hard but lost to Thacher 48-26 to take fourth place.
