On February 23, 2006, the Santa Paula Fire Department conducted its final course review, exercise and graduation ceremony for its most recent Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program, with almost 30 dedicated citizens completing the latest program. Several participants in the class missed some of the training but will be able to make the missed classes up during any future CERT training to graduate and receive their Certificate and vest and helmet. These graduates join an existing, active Santa Paula CERT group that will soon be joined by another 100 Santa Paulans that are currently in 4 other classes that are in session each week. The CERT program goals are; to promote emergency preparedness, develop skills to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster, and to develop neighborhood self-sufficiency before, during and after a natural or man-made disaster. The course is taught over a seven-week period and the topics completed by the participants include Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations I and II, Light Search and Rescue, Terrorism and CERT, Disaster Psychology, CERT Organization, a field Exercise and Graduation.“CERT graduates now have the knowledge, skills and abilities to not only help their family be better prepared for emergencies, but to assist their neighborhood in becoming better prepared and to be able to take positive and productive action when Santa Paula is impacted by major emergencies or disasters. CERT members prepare themselves to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem during times of disaster.” said Captain Steve Lazenby, the course instructor and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the City of Santa Paula.
CERT members will maintain and refine their skills by participating in exercises and activities. They can attend supplemental training opportunities not only in Santa Paula but also all over the Southern California area that will further improve and develop their skills base.Citizens interested in participating in the CERT Program can obtain further information by calling Captain Steve Lazenby at 805-933-4297. The next Thursday night class starts March 9th at 7:00 pm at the Train Depot on the corner of 10th Street and Santa Barbara Street. Call soon to enroll because there is already limited space in next class.
