Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with several women in Hartford, Connecticut. Three women believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative. They organized the first Club and a young development strategy was born. In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to affiliate. The Federated Boys Clubs in Boston was formed with 53 member organizations. This marked the start of a nationwide Movement. In 1931, the Boys Club Federation of America became Boys Clubs of America. In 1956, Boys Clubs of America celebrated its 50th anniversary and received a U.S. Congressional Charter. To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990.This year, the Boys & Girls Club of America will celebrate a 100 years of changing children’s lives. Today, there are more than 3300 clubs in all 50 states serving more than 4.4 million children. All seven organizations from Ventura County will have representation from their boards and staff attending the National Conference in Boston, Massachusetts May 3-7 to celebrate the past but most importantly look forward to the second century of providing hope and opportunity for even more youth. In order to share in this true American success story, the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley we will be having an exhibit of our history at the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula with an opening on June 11th running through October 15th.We will be telling the story of how our Club has grown and made a difference for the youth of Santa Clara Valley at the exhibit starting June 11th at the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula.
