By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA report of shots fired Thursday night led to the arrest of two men and a juvenile on charges unrelated to the incident, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman.Det. Sgt. Gary Marshall said that several reports of shots fired in North 13th Street area were received at about 10:13 p.m. “One reporting party said that several shots were fire and people were heard yelling,” he noted.Upon the arrival of SPPD officers, they observed a white, raised 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Officers followed and, “Given the circumstances, a high-risk stop was initiated on the vehicle near the intersection of 10th and Santa Barbara streets,” said Det. Sgt. Marshall.
The driver of the pickup truck, Anthony Valverde, 18, of Santa Paula, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Paul Carillo, 18, also a city resident and a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for a parole violation and released. Another passenger, an unidentified 16-year-old juvenile living in Santa Paula, was arrested for an outstanding warrant for vehicle theft, said Det. Sgt. Marshall.Although “no connection was determined” between Valverde, Carillo and the unidentified juvenile to the initial report of shots fired that led to their detention, “Interestingly enough, officers did find a spent shell casing in the back of a SPPD patrol car,” where two of the suspects had been placed.A search by SPPD officers and investigators of the area where the shots were reported fired did turn up spent shell casings or other evidence - such as a damaged home or vehicle - that a shooting had occurred. The investigation is continuing according to Det. Sgt. Marshall.
