Junior Achievement: SP Rotary Club honors leaders of tomorrow

Outstanding Santa Paula Union High School juniors were recognized by the Rotary Club for high achievements that are expected to continue during their senior year when they will be eligible for Rotary Scholarships.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesOutstanding Santa Paula Union High School juniors were recognized by the Rotary Club for high achievements that are expected to continue during their senior year when they will be eligible for Rotary Scholarships.Several of those students being honored could not attend the special Rotary Club Junior Achievement program due to taking Advanced Placement Tests noted Past President Elias Valdes.Service to the community and responsible living patterned on the Rotary Four-Way Test were stressed by Elias, who used his late father, Chino Valdes, as an example of the benefits of hard work and dedication.Rotary has shown its dedication by sponsoring humanitarian programs throughout the world including PolioPlus noted Valdes.“I hope next year you’ll consider us,” as a college funding source through the club’s Scholarship Program.“We’re proud of what you do and how you add to our community,” said Rotary Past President Maria Bombara.Junior Achievement Awards result from nominations by SPUHS teachers and/or administrators who not only place a premium on scholastic merit or improvement but also for their efforts on behalf of others.Evelyn Oehmke was honored for Social Studies/History and teacher Paul Tonello noted her outstanding academic achievement and being the person who “sets the pace for the class...”
Arianna Diaz “Shows superior abilities in working with others...I hope that she will reach for the stars and continue her studies for years to come,” noted Foreign Language teacher Cori Bowe Quick.Renaissance Principal Lorenzo Moraza nominated aspiring Marine Andrew Flores for being a role model and “making the most of the opportunities the school has offered him...”Honored for Performing Arts, Kevin Eberts never refuses a task, wrote teacher Basil Augustine. “...he throws himself into all aspects of theater with a honesty and infectious enjoyment.”Educational Services winner Sarah Christman holds two campus jobs and is an outstanding FFA participant who has a strong future in the field of Agriculture, according to Bianca Lopez.Honored for Math, Marisol Ramirez earned the highest grade of “any student currently enrolled in Math Analysis Honors” and is known for her wide smile and enthusiasm wrote teacher Nick Rodriguez.Sarah Saldino is a principal tenor saxophonist and Drum Major, “No mean feat” wrote Music Director Doug Kadansky and her recognition “embodies the very best attributes of a Rotary honoree....”Football player Johnny Rodriguez, honored for Human Services, has volunteered as a Big Brother wrote Jill Sweet Gregory and this year he was the top student in the Health Careers Internship Program.Taking their Advanced Placement Tests and unable to attend were honorees Christian Oseguera for Science; Diego Rico for English; Jesus Cornejo for AP Studio Art; Lindsay Shield for Agriculture Science and Sonia Magana for Computer Science.“Rotary, the club of men and women, knows that the future lies with youth,” said Rotary President Joe Jauregui who urged that those honored with the Junior Achievement Awards consider joining the club sponsored Interact Club.
