LaVonne Askay, the Bead Lady of the Ventura County Fair, makes the rounds each day with her bag of beautiful shiny beads and plush toys, looking for children to give her beads to.“Would you like one?” she asks, “They’re Free!” The Children always smile when they take them.“I just Love to see their little faces light up when they get the beads,” said Askay, wife of C.Patrick Askay, director of the 31st District Agricultural Association, who produce the annual 12 day fair.“They are so precious, it makes me very happy.”With her gaily decorated hat she makes her way through the carnival Midway, through the Youth Expo and everywhere that she might find children. Carrying a big bag of shiny colorful beads, Lavonne Askay spots the children and greets them with a loving approach and strings the beads about their little heads.
The Beads are donated by Chris Guadagno, of Gudagno & Sons, operators of Carnival rides; Kamikazee, Tilt-a-Whirl, Twister, Happy Pond, Kid’s Ferris Wheel and Jalopy Junction. Plush Animals were donated by Ray Leefe, of Candyland Amusements, operators of Carnival rides; DizzyDragon and Slime Bucket. “The children bring so much joy to the ride operators that they love to give some joy back, Askay said, “Guadagno and Sons and Candyland Amusements love to give me beads, plush animals and plush flowers for the children, they are very generous.”The Ventura County Fair is open daily until Sunday, August 13.
