Ventura man commits suicide in parking lot next to busy Highway 126

A distraught man committed suicide with a handgun in a dirt parking lot off of busy Highway 126 on Sunday afternoon, according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA distraught man committed suicide with a handgun in a dirt parking lot off of busy Highway 126 on Sunday afternoon, according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.The incident was reported shortly after 4 p.m., according to SPPD Senior Officer Cody Madison.SPPD Officers, Santa Paula Fire and paramedics responded to a report of an unconscious man in the dirt parking lot just east of the Limoneira Mercantile, located at 55 Hallock Drive, just after 4 p.m. on January 14."Upon arrival officers discovered a subject who had apparently committed suicide with a handgun," and the person was pronounced dead by AMR paramedics.Senior Officer Madison said that although the victim has been identified family must still be notified before his identity is released by the Ventura County Medical Examiner/Coroner's Office.
According to SPPD Sergeant Troyce Reynolds, the man was a 43-year-old resident of Ventura.Although the man shot himself in the head next to the busy highway no one reported witnessing the actual suicide."Nobody saw it happen," said Sergeant Reynolds. "The SPPD received a call of an unconscious subject in the parking lot and we went out there and saw what he had done..."It did not appear that the man had been dead long Sergeant Reynolds added.The investigation is ongoing and the SPPD would like anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact SPPD Det.
