By Susan Branham Santa Paula TimesSanta Paula’s historic Glen Tavern Inn was the setting for a special surprise recently as Angie Birky celebrated her 90th birthday at The Grove restaurant. Angie played an important role in Santa Paula for many years. Birky Real Estate opened in 1958, and continued in operation until last year. Her birthday party guests included many of her friends from the real estate profession.Angie’s birthday was welcomed with hugs and well-wishes from friends and family members, including some who traveled a great distance for the celebration. Her guests greeted her with the traditional birthday cries of “Surprise,” and she was beaming as she greeted her guests in the dining room of the famous inn. “It’s my mother’s 90th birthday,” her son Mike said. “This is a surprise. It was hard keeping it a surprise.”Angie’s grandson Quin traveled from Arizona for the party, and Angie’s son Chuck and his wife Laura came from Wyoming to join her for the gathering. “She’s the love of my life, one of the greatest inspirations,” Chuck said. “She’s just a great inspiration.”
“Her baby sister, Violet, is here from Chicago,” said Mike. Angie was delighted with the afternoon, and appreciated the effort that went into the preparations for the gathering. “This was a surprise,” she said. “They worked so hard to make it a surprise.”The celebrants dined on their choice of Santa Paula Nicoise, Caesar Salad, or a selection of sandwiches. They enjoyed not one, but two birthday cakes. “This is wonderful,” said Angie. “Just wonderful!”
