Brian D. WilsonSanta Paula TimesA teacher and representative of the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers in the Elementary School District has expressed concern over high temperatures in some classrooms during the recent heat wave.Carolyn Ishida told the District Board of Trustees at this months’ meeting of the problem at several schools. She said one kindergarten class at Barbara Webster School recorded a temperature, in the room, of 106 degrees. Classrooms at McKevett School varied from 92 in the morning to 100 degrees in the afternoon, Blanchard School had a 90-degree reading in a class and one room at Isbell Middle School reached 92 degrees.
Ishida said she had spoken to Superintendent Elizabeth DeVita and she was very empathetic. “She even spoke to one of our teachers and said she was well aware and that she was going to do something about it,” Ishida said. “What makes me angry is that the same funds that were used to buy the electronic gates at the back (behind Isbell School) could have been spent to get a room air conditioner. For a mere $500 you can get a room air conditioner. It’s not the best but it’s a lot better than 106.”She added: “We are a district that caters to our business, we are not a district that caters to the kids.” She said she was pleading to the board to address the situation.
