By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA foot pursuit led to the arrest of a Santa Paula man, who was detained by a Santa Paula Police K-9 to prevent the fleeing man from entering the campus of Isbell Middle School.According to SPPD Lieutenant Mike Saviers, the incident occurred Wednesday, March 5 at 9:41 a.m. when SPPD officers went to the a residence on the 300 block of South 5th Street to serve a warrant on “a subject who resided there.” When officers arrived, the subject “answered the door and then ran back into the residence and hid from the officers,” who started to set up a perimeter around the house and requested that a K-9 officer respond to the scene.
The subject “suddenly ran from the house and across East Harvard Boulevard,” chased by SPPD officers, including Senior Officer Ryan Smith and his K-9 partner Rex. Saviers said that when Smith “realized that the subject was into the campus of Isbell Middle School, not knowing if the subject was armed or what he might do, and in an attempt to not let him reach the campus, Rex was released.” Rex, noted Saviers, “detained the subject prior to him reaching the Isbell Middle School campus.”Santa Paula Fire EMTs and ambulance paramedics treated Jason Kohr, 27 of Santa Paula, on scene before he was transported to Santa Paula Hospital. Kohr was treated for a dog bite and the “injuries he received when he was taken to the ground by the K-9,” said Saviers. Upon his release from the hospital Kohr was transported to the Santa Paula Police Station, where he was booked and then taken to Ventura County Jail.Saviers said that Kohr was charged for the warrants - one for a driving under the influence violation and the second for a spousal battery violation - as well as for resisting or delaying a police officer, giving false information to a police officer, and possession of a controlled substance “suspected to be methamphetamine.”
