The DVD, People Like You, has been released, and the Rotary Ojai-West Club has been working on the project for almost a year.  About one year ago, at the encouragement of Stephanie Midget, almost 30 of the Rotary Ojai-West Club members attended Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training sessions that were held in the Ojai area. Two of the class members were filmmakers Dulanie Ellis and Ray Singer, of Walk Your Talk Productions, who taped the entire 20 hours of training. After months of editing, the lectures and exercises have been put on an easy-to-understand DVD. The DVD presentation is an excellent way to review the CERT classes, for those that have already attended, or a perfect introduction to those that need to attend the classes. The DVD condenses the 20 hours of classroom and field training into a 77-minute film that demonstrates ways to prepare to be ready for earthquakes, fires, hurricanes or other unexpected dangers. The title of the finished product is People Like You and it was presented to the public in Ojai on Tuesday February 26th at a mini “Hollywood” type premiere. A crowd of about 150 people gathered to see the 15-minute introduction of the DVD. Rotary Ojai-West sponsored the event and introductions were made by Dulanie Ellis, of Walk Your Talk Productions, and by County Supervisor Steve Bennett. Among those in the audience were Santa Paula Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Fildes, Ventura County Fire Chief Bob Roper and Ojai Police Chief Bruce Norris. The finished product presents the essential knowledge from the actual series of seven CERT classes that normally take eighteen to twenty hours of classroom and field training. In easy-viewing chapters People Like You covers emergency supplies, search & rescue, medical triage and treatment, preparing for hurricanes, fire, earthquakes, pandemics, hazardous materials incidents, travel safety and disaster psychology.
As the presenter of the CERT training program that is shown in the DVD, Santa Paula Fire Captain Steve Lazenby, warns, “In a major disaster, the cavalry just isn’t coming. We have to learn how to take care of ourselves. CERT training helps people be part of the solution instead of part of the problem”. CERT training gives regular folks the knowledge they need to be safer and help create order out of chaos; to bridge the gap until professional help arrives.People Like You is also available to the public. Contact Dulanie Ellis at 805-640-1133 or order on the website at www.walkyourtalkproductions.com to purchase your own copy. The DVD includes the 77-minute film, a 15-minute “sampler,” and emergency supply checklists for the home and car on the inside covers.  Visit www.SantaPaulaCERT.com/Video.htm to see pictures of the premiere and to view a short introduction to People Like You.CERT classes are scheduled to start again in Santa Paula on April 24th.
