By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesIf you like local politics, then mark your calendar for Tuesday, Oct. 10th when it will be Santa Paula politics from early in the morning into the night: the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce’s Good Morning Santa Paula! special meeting to be held at the Community Center (at the corner of Main and Steckel) and the Ventura County League of Women Voters Forum that evening at the Universalist Unitarian Church.Good Morning Santa Paula! will feature a full breakfast at a low $5 price per person and start at 7 a.m.The League of Women Voters forum will feature Supervisor candidates, incumbent Kathy Long and challenger Michael Morgan, from 7 to 8:00 p.m. and all four City Council candidates from 8 to 9:15 p.m. The forum is free; the church is located on Main Street near 8th Street. This is the first year the chamber has done a forum, said Frank Brommenschenkel, GMSP! coordinator, an effort taken up after the Optimist Club canceled their event. “It was kind of disjointed as to what was going to be done, so the chamber decided to have all the candidates come in and provide information on what they think they have to offer the business community. Everyone in the election process should have some ideas on what they can offer Santa Paula, even the schools should be teaching things that benefit business as well as the community in general.”Brommenschenkel said he is looking forward to “having all the candidates and issues in one place at one time, and I think in four minutes they ought to get right to the point and make some good statements,” for voters. “We’ll try to have some questions at the end, but if someone wants to speak for only three minutes and call for questions they can they can do whatever they want. . .but we’ll have to chop them off in four minutes.”Questions and answers will be accommodated at the end of the program.
Both candidates for the Ventura County Board of Supervisors - Long and Morgan - will be on hand.Michael W. Case (running against incumbent Representative Elton Gallegly, who will be in Washington) and State Assembly candidate Robin Sullivan, facing incumbent Hannah-Beth Jackson - who will be absent - will be on hand.Santa Paula City Council candidates Al Guilin, Ray Luna and John Proctor, as well as incumbent Jim Garfield, will participate. Robert Salas, running for another term on the Santa Paula Union High School Board of Trustees, as well as Chris Graham and Ofelia de lo Torre, candidates for the Elementary School District, will also appear. Those for and against Measure I, the land use measure, will speak on the controversial issue as well representatives both pro and con on Measure O, the countywide tobacco fund fight.Program sponsor is Crown Dodge of Fillmore; public relations director Shane Morger will be MC for the forum. To make reservations or for more information, call the Chamber at 525-5561.
