By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesMonday is the last day to register for the June 3 Primary Election, where Santa Paulans will decide a local growth issue, elect a 3rd District County Supervisor, and select candidates for Congress, among other issues appearing on the ballot. The May 19 deadline comes about two weeks after Santa Paula’s sizable number of absentee voters received - and many already have returned - their ballots.Absentee ballots now include some detailed instructions, such as using black or blue ballpoint pen only - felt tip or gel pens are banned because they can bleed through the card. Only one first class stamp is required for the one-page ballot, but the Elections Division must receive the ballot no later than 8 p.m. on June 3; postmarks do not count. The issue on the local ballot that is receiving the most attention is Measure G, sponsored by Limoneira Co., which wants to develop up to 1,500 homes just east of city limits. Although development has found the path to Santa Paula a rough road there has been no publicly recognized organized opposition to the plan, which includes schools, a sports and other parks, amphitheater, open space, retail/commercial and light industrial space.Socorro Lopez-Hanson is challenging District 3 Supervisor Kathy Long for the seat. If either candidate receives 50 percent plus one vote the race will be decided June 3.
Area voters will also be asked to decide between candidates who hope to capture longtime Representative Elton’s Gallegly’s 24th Congressional District seat. Three candidates are running for the Democratic nomination - Jill Martinez of Oxnard, Mary Pallant of Oak View and Marta Jorgensen of Solvang - and second time challenger Michael Tenebaum of Thousand Oaks is vying against Gallegly for the Republican spot on the November ballot.Assemblywoman Audra Strickland is running for re-election to her 37th District seat. Two candidates are competing in the Democratic primary for the right to oppose her in November: David Hare of Camarillo and Ferial Masry of Newbury Park, the Democratic nominee in 2006.Incumbent George Runner of the 17th Senate District, a Republican, is unopposed in the primary, as is Democratic candidate Buddy McFarland of Santa Clarita. There is one name local name on the June 3 ballot: Roberto Orellana of Santa Paula is running against Jeffrey Bennett of Ojai to become a Ventura County Superior Court Judge.
