Santa Paula JV holds on for 34-20 win over Grant

In the last pre-season game of the year the Cardinal JV pulled out a 34-20 win over the visiting Grant High Lancers Friday. The Cards dominated the field in the opening minutes of play, forcing Grant back to their own 12-yard line. The Cardinal JV blocked a 4th down punt and quarterback Kameron Klein went up the middle for a touchdown. The Lancers answered later in the quarter with a TD of their own. The quarter ended with Grant leading 7-6.Santa Paula came back in the second quarter when Tyler Vandergeuten scored a TD a few minutes into play. A two-point conversion put the Cards ahead 14-7. About a minute later Santa Paula recovered a fumble and then scored again on a Justin Macias TD.The Cardinals started the second half on fire. Esteban Magana brought the kickoff to the Grant 42 yard line. A few plays later Klein scored from two yards out. The Lancers managed a TD near the end of the quarter, narrowing Santa Paula’s lead to 26-13.The fourth quarter started slow until about four minutes into the quarter when Steven Kohr intercepted a pass on the Santa Paula 10-yard line. The Cards didn’t make any headway until late in the quarter after another Grant TD. Hector Ayala scored for the Cards as the game wound down. With a two-point conversion, the Cards led 34-20 and held on for the win.
The Cards have their first league game Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Villanova.
