Frosh and JV boys overtake Nordhoff, varsity just misses win

The frosh and JV Cardinal boys’ basketball teams out shot Nordhoff Wednesday night, but the varsity came up two points short. The Santa Paula freshmen came out on top, 52-48 in a hard-fought game. Scoring for Santa Paula were: Kameron Klein 22, Sunny Jackson 13, Miguel Villa 7, Ricardo Avila 3, Edgar Medrano 3, Steven Kohr 2 and Alfredo Rafael 2.It was the same story for the Cardinal JV who won their game, 55-52 in another nail-biter. Scoring for the Cards were: Juan Martinez 17, Taylor Casas 11, Manuel Ortiz 11, Cesar Correa 10 and Juan Reyes 6.Nordhoff came out on top in the varsity game, winning 60-58. Santa Paula led 28-26 at halftime. Nordhoff had squeezed ahead 42-38 by the end of the third quarter. The Rangers had a two-point lead as the clock was running out on the game. With one second on the clock Santa Paula missed two free throws, which would have tied the game and forced it into overtime.Scoring for Santa Paula were: Anthony Del Rio 17, Andrew Jimenez 12, Andrew Huizar 9, Gilbert Mora 6, Eduardo Jimenez 5, Alfredo Cordova 5, T.J. Binsley 3 and Antonio Rios 2.
The Cardinals were tied with Nordhoff for second place in the Frontier League until Wednesday’s game.Santa Paula hosts first place Fillmore today, start with the frosh game at 4:00 p.m.
