By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula man who told police he was trying to force a car off the road because the people inside had burglarized his home was arrested early on March 14 for assault with a deadly weapon. In a separate incident, two men were arrested after they beat a man and took his cash and cell phone.According to Santa Paula Police Lieutenant Troyce Reynolds, the first incident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. when the SPPD started to receive 911 calls from two sources, the man chasing the vehicle and the occupants of the vehicle he was chasing.Reynolds said the incident started on Cherry Hill when 41-year-old William Asplin returned home. “He thought some people outside had been burglarizing his house,” when they actually “had been at a neighbor’s house and were just leaving.” When the three people entered a while pickup truck and left the area, Asplin, driving a Honda Accord, took off after them as they traveled southbound on Santa Paula/Ojai Road.
Reynolds said the occupants of the pickup were the first to notify the SPPD to report “Asplin was chasing their vehicle at a high rate of speed and tried to run them off the road, and he called and said he was chasing people who burglarized his home.” Both vehicles stopped when they saw a SPPD patrol vehicle, and Asplin was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.Shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, SPPD officers responded to a report of a robbery at 130 W. Harvard Blvd. “Apparently the victim was jumped by two guys” who, Reynolds said, “used their fists to beat him up, took some cash and his cell phone, and ran into a nearby apartment. It wasn’t hard to track them down.”The victim identified Paul Cardona, 22, of Ventura, and Joseph Lopez, 20, of Santa Paula, as the men who beat and robbed him. Officers were only able to recover the victim’s cell phone, but not the cash, Reynolds said. Both Cardona and Lopez were arrested for robbery.
