Founded in 1937 by Santa Clara River Valley artists Douglas Shively, Cornelis and Jesse Arms Botke, among others, the exhibit in turn created the Santa Paula Art Collection, owned by the city, school districts, hospital and library.All entries are to be delivered to Blanchard Community Library on Thursday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Blanchard Community Library is located at 119 N. 8th St.Artists and photographers can enter up to three works in each category; there is a $10 non-refundable entry fee per work. Paintings must be original - no copies - and done in the last two years. they must be dry, suitably framed and securely wired with eye screws for hanging. Watercolor, pastels, photographs and graphics are to be under glass or plexiglass. Images must not exceed 36 inches by 48 inches. All photographs - excepting slides - are eligible and must be framed and securely wired for hanging. The Santa Paula Society of the Arts is gearing up for the 64th Annual Art & Photography Exhibit, among the oldest pre-juried art competitions in the state
By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Santa Paula Society of the Arts is gearing up for the 64th Annual Art & Photography Exhibit, among the oldest pre-juried art competitions in the state.This year, over $4,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded during the Feb. 17th reception - sponsored by Santa Clara Valley Bank - at Blanchard Community Library. The reception runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and will feature music by Mexican folk harpist Xavier Montes.The exhibit draws artists from across the nation who have several categories - oil/acrylic, watercolors, graphics/mixed media and photography - to enter their works in.Last year the show drew over 300 entries, said Virginia Gunderson, President of the Santa Paula Society of the Arts. And, the reception for the artists and announcement of award winners has become a popular social event for artists and art lovers alike.One Douglas Shively “Award of Excellence” will be awarded in each category, a prize judged by a jury of artistic peers who entered the competition. “Best of Show” will again be sponsored by Santa Paula Chevrolet.The most unique prize, the Peoples’ Choice/Pat Johnson Memorial Award, will be decided by those who attend the exhibit and mark a ballot for their favorite entry. There will also be Judges’ Awards in all categories.
