Cardinals fight back to win first league game against Villanova, 52-28

The Cardinal varsity had trouble stopping the Villanova Prep offense in the early minutes of their game Friday night. This was the first Frontier League game of the season for Santa Paula. Villanova came on strong in the first quarter, scoring a touchdown early in the game. In the second quarter the Wildcats again scored a TD. They were close to scoring again when the Cardinal defense stopped them cold at the one-yard line.In the final four minutes of the second quarter, the Cards scored four touchdowns, giving them a 28-14 lead going into the halftime break. Santa Paula quarterback Kameron Klein was the first to score on a 7-yard run. Klein slipped the ball to Bryson Daniels a couple of minutes later and he ran the ball 66-yards for a TD. With a little over a minute on the clock Klein passed the ball to Ivan Ledesma for their third touchdown. Finally, with the half about to end Klein took the ball in from about one yard out.The Wildcats managed two more TDs in the second half, but the Cardinals answered with four touchdowns and a field goal to cement their lead. Martin Pulido scored on a 4-yard run and Steven Kohr made two TDs, one on a 13-yard run, the other off a 10-yard pass from Klein.The Cardinal JV lost their game 37-0.
The Cardinals, now at 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, host Fillmore Friday. The JV plays at 4:30 p.m. The varsity takes the field at 7:30 p.m. This will be game number 99 between the two long time rivals. Santa Paula won last year, 34-14.
