A family disturbance early Saturday evening led to a physical assault on a responding Santa Paula police officer before a 17-year-old gang member was taken into custody on a variety of charges, including battery and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

According to SPPD Lieutenant Troyce Reynolds, the incident occurred Saturday, November 28 at about 6:40 p.m. when officers responded to the report of a family disturbance  - allegedly a 17-year-old juvenile trying to hit his father - in the 600 block of East Main Street. When Officer Randy Haumann arrived on scene and made contact with the family, the juvenile unexpectedly rushed the officer and began hitting him.

Both the officer and the juvenile fell to the ground and the fight continued until Officer Damien Shilo and Officer Susan Green arrived on scene. “They were able to assist Officer Haumann in handcuffing the juvenile,” who tried to assault all the officers until he was restrained. Haumann received minor injuries, including facial scrapes.

Reynolds said the juvenile, a known gang member, was taken into custody for “resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and being under the influence of a controlled substance.” The juvenile was medically cleared, booked and then transported to Ventura County Juvenile Hall where he was incarcerated.
