By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThey won’t be raising the roof at the Community Center after the City Council approved a plan to delay roofing the patio area to finish funding for park improvements, a move that will be celebrated by basketball players and fans. The council approved the switch at the Feb. 5 meeting. The projects to improve the basketball courts at Las Piedras, Teague and Obergon parks had been on hold, even though the city had received a $19,700 grant for improvements early last year. But the job was going to cost more: according to the report by Public Works Director/City Engineer Norm Wilkinson, the total budgeted cost of the projects will be approximately $50,000.City Park & Recreation Facilities funds will donate about $10,300.The Capital Improvement Program had been holding on to $20,000 to build a roof over the patio at the Community Center to make the area more visitor friendly in hopes of renting the area out more often.
“These funds can be shifted to the Basketball Court improvement project,” Wilkinson noted and with council approval, bidding will begin immediately. At Las Piedras Park, the existing court will be resurfaced, new backstops will be installed and the build up of grass near the court will be removed.Teague Park will see its existing large court converted to smaller courts, resurfacing of same, installation of new backdrops and removal of an overhanging tree.A whole new court will replace the small circular court at Obergon Park. The only alternative, noted Wilkinson, would be to delete the project at Obergon Court.Plans have already been finalized for the court construction work, which was delayed due to the funding shortage.
