GATE classes build bridges

Leslie Borchard's GATE classes have put their knowledge to good use after exploring the history of bridges, and types of bridges. Groups of students were broken up into companies that entailed a project director, architect, carpenter, transportation chief, and accountant all working together to build a bridge that would withstand a bar across the middle of the bridge and hanging weights from the bar for 30 seconds. Before the companies could purchase necessary material for their bridge they had to have their blueprints inspected and passed according to the building code. Once the company received a building permit, they were free to begin construction. The students each received a certificate of accomplishment just before the breaking of the bridge day came tumbling down.
