By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA popular Santa Paula eatery was the scene of an armed robbery that occurred Saturday night that involved two gunmen, one of whom kept a weapon on customers while his partner got the money from the owner.According to Sgt. James Ward of the Santa Paula Police Department, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at La Terazza Restaurant, a popular eatery located in the 1000 block of East Main Street, at the corner of 10th Street. The robbery, which occurred at about 8:07 p.m., featured two men who entered the business and demanded money; one suspect was brandishing an “Uzi-type,” semi-automatic weapon,” noted Sgt. Ward. The suspect holding the Uzi-type weapon went behind the counter and made the owner hand him the cash from the register while the second suspect stayed in the customer area, brandishing an unknown type handgun.“After the money was handed over, the suspects fled on foot southbound on South Ventura Street,” and disappeared. The suspects are described as two male Hispanics, possibly in their late teens, wearing all black clothing and beanie-type hats.
A search of the area by SPPD officers and Ventura Sheriff’s deputies failed to flush out the suspects. No one was injured during the robbery, which yielded an unknown amount of cash, said Sgt. Ward.“The restaurant was doing really good business at the time,” said Sgt. Steven Carter. The robbery was unusual, he noted, including one of the weapons used: “We haven’t seen that type of a gun used in a robbery in quite awhile,” he added. “We’ve taken them from people. . .it could be a model that was mistaken for an Uzi,” he added.Sgt. Carter said the robbers had the beanies pulled down over their faces, so detectives “didn’t have a lot to go on,” during the early stages of the investigation. If anyone has any information on the robbery they are urged to call the Santa Paula Police Department at 525-4474; anonymous tips can be left on the SPPD Tip Hot Line at 933-4253-#(pound)-1.
