This week’s “Game of the Week” had plenty of great pitching and just enough hitting for the McCarthy Pirates to edge the Billy Doctors 2-1. Pirate Nathan Roth pitched six innings of one hit ball allowing only an unearned run. Pete McCarthy hurled the last two innings striking out 4 to record a save. Billy Doc’s Mike De La Torre allowed only one run on 2 hits in 5 innings, while Carlos Sanchez gave up one run on 2 hits in 3 innings. Ken Overly was the only Pirate to have two hits, both singles and Parker Hindle had a double with an RBI to provide just enough power for the win. For the Billy Doctors, Ruben Gomez had the only two hits, both singles. This Pirate win moved them into a first place JCBL tie at 4-2 with Rangers’ Black and the El Rio Hawks.

In other games, La Cabana beat Instant Baseball 7-1 and El Rio Hawks sailed 10-2 over Rangers’ Blue. For La Cabana, Eric Columbia was the hitting star with 2 doubles and a walk with 2 RBI’s. Joey Contreras, Joshua Grajeda, and Grif Garrabrant held Instant Baseball to one unearned run. Caleb Johnson had two doubles for a losing cause for Instant Baseball.

The El Rio Hawks broke open a close game in the seventh inning to win flying away, beating the Ranger Blues 10-2. Leading 3-2 going into the seventh, Oscar Palmer unleased a bases loaded clearing double to go with his other double and single for the game. Of course, the Hawks ace Jake Regalado went the distance adding 13 K’s to his league leading strikeouts. Dewey Gratton led the Blues in hitting with 2 singles and 2 RBI’s. Dennis Doherty pitched well allowing 3 runs in six innings for the Blues.
